“How much do your Custom Cabinets cost?”
About 6 out of 10 customer calls to our office want to know what our custom cabinets cost. Most are calling because they have been to our website and like what they see. Now they want to know if custom cabinetry is in their budget. Beyond the size of the unit, the answer lies in the quality of the cabinetry.
Anatomy of Good, Better, and Best Custom Cabinets
Certainly, everyone wants the best, but most of us can’t afford to always purchase the top of the line. So we make decisions based on how much value it adds to our life experience. You wouldn’t pay $500 for a coffee mug, but you might pay that for a beautiful jacket that makes you look like a million dollars!
Now, let’s look at purchases that you expect to last for years. For high ticket items, such as appliances, cars, and remodeling, there are typically 3 categories. Good, Better, or Best Quality. Most often, price differences indicate a difference in quality…and the custom cabinet business is no different!
Let’s say that Company #1 gives you a bid of $2500, Company #2 comes in at $5000, and Company #3 quotes you $7500. Now you become suspicious. You probably wonder if the high bid is trying to rip you off and you may think that the low bid is too cheap. So you start ‘Googling’ for answers.
If you received a $2500 bid for an 8 foot wall unit, beware! In this case, the cost of material alone for that size, leaves no margin for profit…unless the material is sub-par. On the high end, a $7500 bid might be a truly custom unit or just run-of-the-mill with a huge mark-up. So, here are some things to ask when considering cabinet bids:
- Do they use imported material? (This means they buy prefabricated boxes, to which they add door and drawer faces, then call it ‘custom’…It’s not!)
- Do they have recent photos? (Do their photos look a bit too perfect? They may have found them on the internet and put them on their website!)
- Do they have detailed customer reviews?
- Did they return your call promptly?
- Did you get a custom design…or merely shown options to choose from?
